From “M.I.A.” to Making Moves: NANI Is Carving Her Own Lane in L.A. Hip-Hop
With an unapologetic attitude, a growing catalog of music, and a sound that's all her own, the rising Los Angeles rapper is turning self-discovery into a movement.
Everybody wants to be heard in today's rap game. But finding your own voice? That's a different story.
For Los Angeles artist NANI (@nanidabarbi), discovering that voice has been one of the most important parts of her journey into music.
When trapLA connected with the rising rapper back in February 2026, she had only been rapping for approximately four months. At the time, she was discussing her record “M.I.A.” with K.FLEXIN, a song that helped her discover her sound, embrace her personality, and become more comfortable expressing herself.
Fast-forward to October 2026, and NANI has continued building her catalog with releases including “pretty & i know it,” “CLOCK IT” featuring J.FUGAZI, “CONVERSATIONS” featuring K.FLEXIN, and “CANDY” featuring K.FLEXIN and J.FUGAZI.
For an artist who was still finding her footing earlier this year, the growing discography reflects her determination to establish herself in L.A.'s independent music scene.
But understanding where she's going starts with understanding the record that helped her find her voice.
Going M.I.A. to Come Back Stronger
For NANI, “M.I.A.” represents more than simply disappearing from the spotlight. It's about understanding when to step away, focus on yourself, and put in the work before showing the world what you've been creating.
"As an upcoming artist it's important to use absence/time alone to build yourself," she explained.
She says both she and K.FLEXIN understood the importance of going silent before releasing music they believed could make an impact.
That mentality became the foundation for “M.I.A.”
Produced by Jay Bando, the record came together quickly. According to NANI, the instrumental immediately caught her attention, and within seconds of hearing it, she already had the beginning of her verse in mind.
The writing process felt natural. The studio experience, however, became something much bigger.
The Record That Helped Her Find Her Sound
NANI describes “M.I.A.” as a turning point in her development.
The record allowed her to experiment with her delivery, express her emotions, and show a side of her personality that she hadn't fully embraced musically.
"M.I.A. is where I found my sound, how I want to sound, how free I aim to be lyrically," she told trapLA.
Rather than approaching the song with an overly calculated mindset, she leaned into her natural humor and attitude.
The concept brought two perspectives together, with NANI speaking for the women while K.FLEXIN delivered the men's point of view.
The result was a playful back-and-forth that felt more like an unfiltered conversation than a traditional collaboration.
For NANI, that was the point.
She wanted listeners to have fun, recognize the humor in everyday situations, and understand the importance of being comfortable with who they are.
Behind the scenes, recording the song also taught her valuable lessons about herself as an artist.
She recalled how the people in the studio remained patient, encouraging, and engaged throughout the process. Their energy allowed her to relax and develop confidence behind the microphone.
It was an experience that reinforced something she's carried into her music: the environment you create in can have just as much impact as the lyrics you write.
Bringing Her Real Personality to the Camera
The “M.I.A.” music video became another opportunity for NANI to push herself creatively.
She credited @1119shotyou and her uncle @dashdigital when discussing the visual, emphasizing the important role her uncle has played in her development as an artist.
Beyond helping her understand the music business, she says her uncle provides emotional support, encouragement, and guidance when she begins questioning whether she's doing enough.
That trust played a major role in her willingness to embrace the creative direction.
But one of her biggest goals for the music video was personal.
She wanted to stop hiding behind the camera and allow her personality to come through.
NANI admitted that she sometimes holds back her facial expressions because of the attitude they can communicate. For “M.I.A.,” she made a conscious decision to let that side of herself show.
The visual embraced her bold, confident energy while highlighting the chemistry between her and K.FLEXIN.
Their performances reflected the song's back-and-forth concept, giving viewers two different perspectives on the same conversation.
But underneath the humor was a more personal message.
One particular scene addresses jealousy, negativity, and the experience of being disliked by people who don't truly know you.
NANI connected that moment to her upbringing, explaining that she's dealt with negativity from people she once considered friends and even family.
Those experiences helped shape her understanding of self-respect, boundaries, and the importance of protecting her peace.
A Different Perspective on Being a Female Rapper
One thing NANI made clear during our conversation is that she doesn't want to be boxed into somebody else's idea of what a female rapper should be.
Her music comes from her experiences, her emotions, and her perspective as a young Black woman navigating relationships, independence, and personal growth.
She wants her lyrics to speak to women who are learning how to deal with young men, establish boundaries, respect themselves, and still remain emotionally honest.
And she isn't afraid to bring a little attitude with that message.
NANI describes herself as somebody who understands both sides of the conversation. Her tomboy side allows her to laugh at some of the things men say, even while she's representing the women's perspective.
That combination of humor, confidence, vulnerability, and directness is something she believes separates her from other emerging artists.
But perhaps the most revealing part of her philosophy is how she measures her own progress.
"Almost like I'm rap battling the old me vs. who I'm becoming," she explained.
Instead of focusing on competing with every other artist in Los Angeles, NANI says her biggest competition is the person she was yesterday.
It's a mentality built around constantly improving rather than trying to recreate somebody else's success.
From “M.I.A.” to a Growing 2026 Catalog
During our February conversation, NANI hinted that “M.I.A.” was helping set the tone for something bigger.
Looking at her music catalog in October 2026, listeners can see that she's continued releasing records and collaborating with artists who have been part of her creative circle.
Her 2026 releases include “pretty & i know it,” a solo release that puts her name front and center; “CLOCK IT” featuring J.FUGAZI; “CONVERSATIONS” featuring K.FLEXIN; and “CANDY” featuring both K.FLEXIN and J.FUGAZI.
While “M.I.A.” helped introduce listeners to her personality and artistic direction, these additional releases give audiences more material to explore as she continues developing her identity.
And there's something to be said about an artist who's willing to keep putting music out while still learning the business.
In an era where thousands of artists are fighting for attention, establishing an identity that listeners can recognize matters just as much as releasing the next song.
NANI believes individuality is one of the most important qualities an L.A. artist can have.
She's not interested in forcing her flow, copying another artist's voice, or building a personality around whatever happens to be trending.
Her goal is to keep becoming a better version of herself.
And judging by the music she's continued putting out throughout 2026, she's giving herself opportunities to grow with every release.
More Than Music: Building Something on Her Own Terms
When NANI reflected on her early support back in February, she expressed genuine surprise at how much love she had received in just a few months of making music.
She believed part of that connection came from allowing people to see who she really was.
And that authenticity remains central to how she wants to present herself.
NANI wants young Black women to understand that confidence and self-respect can exist together. That being outspoken doesn't mean you can't be vulnerable. And that pursuing a career in entertainment shouldn't require abandoning your personal values.
She was particularly direct about wanting to succeed without compromising herself behind the scenes.
"For anyone discovering me from M.I.A., I'm here to represent for black young women," she explained during our February conversation.
She knows the challenges of being an independent artist won't disappear overnight, but she's determined to move forward without losing herself in the process.
For those discovering her through “M.I.A.” or any of her 2026 releases, the message is consistent: be yourself, protect your identity, and don't allow anybody else to define your worth.
And while NANI is still in the early stages of building her career, she's already demonstrating a mindset that could serve her well as she continues navigating the industry.
She's not trying to be the next version of somebody else.
She's working on becoming the best version of herself.
From finding her voice on “M.I.A.” to expanding her catalog throughout 2026, NANI is writing her own story, one record at a time.
Because sometimes going M.I.A. isn't about disappearing.
Sometimes it's about figuring out exactly who you are before the rest of the world catches on.
