At just 20 years old, Kali J is already carving out her lane in the rap game with a distinct voice and undeniable presence. Raised in San Diego, California, this young artist has been using music as an escape since childhood—penning her own songs as a way to process life’s hardships and express her truth.
Her newest single, “How You Do It,” is a shift in sound that shows Kali J’s growth and versatility. “I wanted to make a song for the summertime—something fun, that could connect with the younger side of the culture I’m heavily involved in,” she told us. “So I went for more of a party sound, which I’ve been yet to do until now.” The record blends West Coast confidence with catchy production, making it a must-add to your summer playlist.
While the energy is playful, Kali J’s journey hasn’t been all lighthearted. When asked about the biggest challenge of being a female rapper today, she got real:
“The initial rejection you receive based off the fact that you are a woman… most times, male counterparts in the same field will pass judgment without acknowledging whether or not you’re truly talented. You constantly have to prove yourself to become respected.”
That grind and persistence shine through in her music and her visuals. When it comes to her creative style, she credits her family, friends, and the culture that raised her:
“I’ve always had my own personal sense of style and blend that in with different experiences I’ve had in life or been around.”
As for what’s next? Kali J says fans can expect a more polished rollout and a serious push. “More music on all platforms, more visuals, and definitely more content very soon,” she confirmed.
